Lab-grown diamonds offer the same dazzling beauty as mined stones — but their journey from creation to perfection is a marvel of modern science and craftsmanship.

Introduction

Lab-grown diamonds are revolutionizing the jewelry industry with their ethical origins, eco-conscious appeal, and affordability — all while offering identical brilliance to natural diamonds. But after they’re grown in a lab, they still undergo the same detailed cutting and polishing process to reveal their true sparkle.

At Gemstone Diamond Empire, our lab-grown diamonds are cut and polished by skilled artisans in Surat, India — the global hub of diamond manufacturing. Whether you’re a jeweler, retailer, or designer, this behind-the-scenes look shows how each gem is transformed into a certified showpiece.

How Lab-Grown Diamonds Begin

Lab diamonds are created using two primary technologies:

  1. CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition)
A diamond seed is placed in a chamber filled with carbon-rich gases. When heated, the gases deposit carbon onto the seed layer by layer, forming a rough diamond crystal.
  2. HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature)
A diamond seed is subjected to intense pressure and heat, simulating the Earth’s natural diamond-forming process.

Once grown, the rough lab-grown diamond looks similar to a mined one — but needs expert shaping and finishing to shine.

Cutting & Polishing Process (Same as Natural Diamonds)

After growth, the lab-grown rough diamond goes through the same 7-step precision process as natural stones:

  1. Planning & Mapping
    • Advanced scanning software determines the best shape and cut, maximizing clarity and yield.
  2. Marking
    • Technicians mark the rough to guide where it should be sawn or cleaved.
  3. Cleaving/Sawing
    • The diamond is split into parts with lasers or blades, preparing it for shaping.
  4. Bruting
    • This step gives the stone its basic shape (often round), done by grinding two diamonds together.
  5. Faceting
    • Blocking: Sets the main facets.
    • Brillianteering: Adds the rest for maximum brilliance.
  1. Polishing
    • Each facet is hand-polished for smoothness, sparkle, and symmetry.
  2. Grading & Certification
    • Diamonds are sent to labs like IGI or GIA for grading of cut, color, clarity, and carat — the 4Cs.
